In reply to <a href="https://www.purplemonkeyhostel.com/opening-a-hostel/#comment-11">James</a>.

Good question James. The hotel industry has been putting a lot of pressure on authorities over the past few years to ensure an even playing field for all those who are providing tourist services. Although laws range from country to country, in Colombia all providers of lodging to tourists need to comply with the same legislation which includes fire evacuation procedures and sanitation. Airbnb do not verify that all this documentation is in order and while some Airbnb's are compliant, there are many that are operating illegally. Migration Colombia have been doing inspections and closing apartments that are not compliant. Repeated offenses have even resulted in the confiscation of the property from the landlord. The following is a link of a good article explaining the situation:

So what about the idea of just renting a regular 2-3 bedroom house and putting bunk beds in it and using Airbnb for all bookings. Seems like the easiest way to do it starting out. Instead of having to apply for an official hostel permit etc. Could that work?
