In reply to ella. Thanks for the comment Ella. The warmness of the locals is one of my favourite things about this city. The vast majority are proud to be sharing their culture with outsiders. Like you say though you need to be aware of your surroundings as it would be naive to think that 100% of the residents think the same way

In reply to Carl. Good blog. Medellin is a great place but you have to have responsibility for yourself. Locals came up to us in the streets thanking us for coming to their country. Like all cities you need to be aware of your surroundings.

The increase in tourism in Medellin is great but is a double edged sword- the economy is booming but the country has been surprised by the sudden interest in foreigners and has to react quickly to improve its infrastructure to make it as tourist friendly as possible

A good blog. Medellín is a beautiful city but of course has its dangerous parts like anywhere in this part of the world. Backpackers seem to be getting younger and are less streetwise and so put themselves into danger when just a little awareness would go a long way

In reply to Carl. Thanks Carl. I agree that there are too many articles trying to sell Medellin as a perfect paradise. Its a beautiful city and great place to live but like any South American city you can get yourself into trouble if you don't respect it

In reply to pamela. Hahaha Thanks Pamela! Yes I think the idea of "dando papaya" is alien to a lot of foreigners. It's not about living in fear and expecting the worst, its about having common sense to avoid putting yourself in an unsavory situation

For once a good point made by someone instead of trying to sell Medellin. Colombia as a whole could be taken in the same view and of course there are the dangerous zones for tourists but common sense should prevail.
